- NOTE: This is a "preview" of Robert Mackay's Pilot's ToolBox, a program
- which allows one (among other things) to create an AAF Adventure from
- a Flight Plan created by Flight Planner (NAME.PLN: either DOS or Windows).
-
- It is uploaded here with his permission. The adventure was made with PTB6
- (beta 6); it is quite likely that some further changes will be made before
- final release.

- SJCSFO
-
- Included in SJCSFO.ZIP:
-
- SJCSFO.TXT -- edited .TXT file produced by Toolbox
- SJCSFO.ADV -- created with AAF from SJCSFO.TXT
- SJCSFO.MOD -- see below
- HASH.VOC -- see below
- PTBEDIT.TXT - see end of this documentation
- SJCSFO.XRV -- text of ATC communications produced by Toolbox; these are
- also to be found in the .TXT file
- SFOIAP.PCX -- An Instrument Approach Plate for SFO, not to government specs!
- SJCSFO.DOC -- you're reading it
- ___________________
-
- A flight from San Jose International to San Francisco International.
-
- No VOC files are provided; use SJCSFO.XRV if you want to make your own.
- Therefore even if you choose (at the beginning of the adventure) W for
- voice, you won't hear anything except HASH.VOC, until you make your own
- VOCs. This includes the "chatter", that is, messages to other planes:
- those messages can be determined from SJCSFO.TXT.
-
- SFOIAP.PCX was done with Georges Lorsche's excellent FINALA, in library 2/
- General Aviation within FINALA.ZIP.
-
- The only editing done to the SJCSFO.TXT file was to change the default
- frequencies for clearance, ground, tower, and departure, as well as center.
- I also commented out the SETPOSITION line, which is replaced by the mode
- file (SJCSFO.MOD) in this zip, and added an introductory reminder as to
- what scenery should be used. And I added a keystroke ("7") which allows
- you to unfold an IAP of SFO. See below on how to create your own version
- of SJCSFO.TXT.
-
- SJCSFO.MOD sets you up with the squawk frequency correct, and nav radios
- 1 and 2 tuned to 108.9 (SFO RY 19L ILS) and 115.8 (SFO VOR) respectively.
- You are positioned for taxiing near the threshold of San Jose (SJC)
- runway 30R, in the stock Cessna, in tower view: your aircraft identification
- is Cessna 18390. You will have to set COM to clearance frequency when
- prompted.
-
- The adventure plays "HASH.VOC" before each ATC message to you
- (included in SJCSFO.ZIP). Be sure HASH.VOC is in your FS directory.
- Reason for HASH.VOC: to wake you up in case you're watching TV.
-
- This flight can be made with default scenery, but you may want to use
- Ken Fugate's excellent BAYAREA.SC1, in CASBAY.ZIP, library 6/Scenery.
- BAYAREA.SC1 requires about 49000 bytes of static memory; there is no
- .DY1 file. For more details see the .DOC which comes with Ken's files.
-
- Note that the ILS localizer for SFO RY 19L, which is your destination
- runway, does not tune in properly until you're about 4.5 DME out.
-
- There is dynamic scenery (in FS 4.0 default) at SFO; if you happen to
- collide with one of the heavies there, file a complaint about the
- inefficiency of ATC with the FAA!
-
- Of course if you want to see what the original SJCSFO.TXT looked like,
- create a SJC->SFO plan with Flight Planner (using SD-DEF.FPD and the
- CESSNA18.ACS) and then convert that plan to an adventure with the Toolbox.
- Save the current SJCSFO.TXT in a backup file before doing so, and then
- compare the two. I used the Windows version of the Toolbox converter,
- but the DOS version should turn out a file identifical to the unedited
- SJCSFO.TXT. Since, however, the Toolbox chooses runways for departure
- and arrival randomly, there may be some differences.
-
- Try out this file in a variety of ways. First fly it manually. Then try
- FPAP (Flight Planner AutoPilot) -- hit "W" after you get Departure
- clearance. Then try tuning in Flight Service (122.2) on your COM radio
- and hitting first "J", which will give you your clearance, and then "X",
- which will allow you to cruise around in VFR before returning to your
- plan.
-
- SUMMARY
-
- A check list on what to do with SJCSFO.ADV.
-
- 1. Load FS and bring up SJCSFO.MOD.
- 2. Set options in your SGA menu as you see fit.
- 3. If you plan to use BAYAREA.SC1, be sure that loads, too; otherwise
- change static scenery memory, etc., as required to get it to come up.
- 4. Go to your AAF menu and either choose SJCSFO.ADV manually or hit
- "3" to get it to load up with the mode file.
- 5. Set other options in the AAF menu as you see fit.
- 6. Escape from AAF menu, and you're in business.
- 7. Answer dialogue questions - 'x' to acknowledge scenery reminder;
- W (voice) E (text) R (both) for ATC messages.
- 8. As instructed, either go straight to clearance by setting frequency
- on your COM radio, or hit "X" to get further instructions, such as
- note that you can hit "W" for automatic pilot after clearance; tune to FSS
- on 122.2 and hit "J" for route or "X" for VFR flying; "7" for IAP, etc.
- 9. After tuning clearance, hit "R" to repeat any ATC message.
-
- If you choose FPAP (Flight Planner Automatic Pilot), it will take you all
- the way. But it will tune out, and you will be warned, after you have
- turned for base leg. Be ready with your plane trimmed correctly, and
- continue turning to the base leg heading (280) if you're not already there.
- As you have been instructed by SFO tower, turn for final upon intersection
- of the localizer.
-
- Be aware that the ToolBox will change wind at destination. Check with ATIS
- just before final approach to get the current conditions: you will be told
- the proper frequency. Tower will also give you wind direction and speed.
-
- The files included in SJCSFO.ZIP are copyrighted, and may not be
- distributed in any form, including uploading to bulletin boards, without
- the express permission of the author. Of course you are free to modify
- them in any way you choose for your own purposes.

- In this zip you will also find PTBEDIT.TXT. This is the first draft of a
- document which will be included with ToolBox which has some suggestions on
- customizing and fine-tuning the .TXT file produced by ToolBox before
- compiling with AAF. Some of these have been used with SJCSFO. It won't
- make a great deal of sense to you until you have the ToolBox, but it will
- give some idea of the flexibility of that program.
